What is an apostille?

If you contact a translation and legalization company and ask for information on how to legalize a document issued from abroad and intended to be used in Bulgaria, the first questions they will ask you will be: from which country was the document issued and does it have an "apostille"?

On the other hand, if you need to legalise documents issued in Bulgaria and intended to be used abroad, they must be formalised in a certain way - an "apostille" must be affixed to them, after which they are exempted from any subsequent forms of certification and legalisation, and it is not always required that the document issued in Bulgaria and intended to be used abroad be translated into the relevant foreign language.

What is an apostille?

"An 'apostille' is a certification (stamp) on the document itself or in an annex thereto which certifies the authenticity of the signatures and seals affixed to the document and has precisely defined particulars which are exactly the same for all countries which have signed the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 and legalise their documents with this stamp. Bulgaria became a party to the Hague Convention on 30 April 2001.

In accordance with the requirements of the Hague Convention, the "apostille" shall be rectangular in shape, with the mandatory particulars, in accordance with the attached models. The title of the 'apostille' must be in French - Apostille (Convention de la Haye du 5 octobre 1961), and in some cases the title of the 'apostille' is bilingual, in French and in the national language of the State issuing the 'apostille'. The mandatory particulars in the apostille may be written in French or English as well as in the national language of the State issuing the apostille.
